Wild birds, still water,
and the last of the light.
Original acrylic paintings and canvas prints by Taryn Giles, from Clifton Royal, New Brunswick.
Painted LoonAcrylic on canvas, 2026 · 16 × 48 in · Impact series · Original available
As part of the “Impact” series, Painted Loon explores my impact as an artist on the environment. The swath of paint across the loon reflects the risks I pose with the wastewater I use to clean my brushes. Creating this piece encouraged me to research and source more sustainable supplies.

Corey's Canoe

Corey’s Canoe evokes a quietness, the stillness that only happens when we move slowly and really immerse ourselves in a place. I was inspired by the canoe's natural materials and craftsmanship, and how it fit so beautifully into its surroundings.

What piques my interest in puffins is that they spend most of their lives at sea, coming to cliffsides only briefly to nest. Every summer, a colony returns to a small, remote island in New Brunswick. The curiosity of these three is especially captivating.

Stumped is part of a series titled “Impact” that explores the effect my art practice has on the natural world. The painting shows nature reclaiming an old tree stump I imagined having been harvested to create the canvas I paint on. Although wood and paper are necessary for creation, I aim to source materials sustainably, waste little, and reuse whenever possible.

As part of the “Impact” series, Flashed plays on the effect of light. The barred owl is clearly lit; however, the moon is behind him. As an observer of nature, it is sometimes necessary to bring artificial light into a wild space. Being aware of the disruption reminds me to respect the space of nature's inhabitants and to pay close attention to the effect my presence has.
